| For years, we depended upon anti-virus on the desktop. As email threats through SMTP emerged, AV on the desktop became inefficient; most organizations have now deployed anti-virus on their SMTP gateway. Similarly, as threats have moved to the HTTP channel, anti-virus solutions need to be deployed on this channel. The gateway solution inherently introduces latency, but while this latency was unnoticeable on the SMTP gateway, HTTP is an interactive protocol and any latency is not tolerated. Some web proxy vendors require a separate box that talks to the proxy via the ICAP protocol, which increases latency even further. |
