Being Green
The electricity consumption and greenhouse gas emissions caused by computers and the Internet is provoking concern. A recent report by Gartner said the global IT industry generated as much greenhouse gas as the world’s airlines—about 2% of global CO2 emissions. ‘[Traditional] Data centres are among the most energy-intensive facilities imaginable,’ said Evan Mills, a scientist at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in California.

The use of IT equipment has a major impact on energy consumption and on the environment. Companies collectively deploy millions of point products on-premise. This reliance on redundant, outdated, and energy-inefficient hardware consumes more electricity than needed, creating a significant carbon footprint. Zscaler is committed to reducing energy consumption to promote a greener environment and our unique technology gives other firms the same opportunity.
Cloud Security, SaaS is Green
Rather than buying and deploying dozens of boxes on-premise, companies can route traffic through Zscaler’s multi-tenant, centralized data centers. Infrastructure in-the-cloud is better utilized: centralized servers reduce redundant hardware and operate more efficiently, reducing the amount of energy used. Moreover, features such as efficient cooling further increase energy efficiency.
High Performance is Green
Rather than deploying low performance proxies, which process a few thousand transactions per second, Zscaler has purpose-built high performance web proxies which operate at 50 to 100 times the throughput of a traditional proxy. A higher throughput therefore consumes 1/50th of the energy consumed by a traditional web proxy.
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Conserve
Zscaler is taking the initiative to minimize wasteful consumption. Paper waste is reduced by encouraging double-sided printing or eliminating unnecessary printing. Recycled paper with a high percentage of post-consumer waste is used whenever possible.
Conclusion
Traditional on-premise solutions require extensive electricity usage and are not designed to reduce their carbon footprints. Thousands of customers individually maintain thousands of appliances operating below maximum performance. Zscaler’s multi-tenant data centers utilize appliances more efficiently and maximize performance to reduce energy consumption.
