Checking all the boxes for CMMC in higher education

Organizations seeking Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) include academic research centers (i.e., enclaves), and like other DoD suppliers and partners handling controlled unclassified information (CUI), they must certify their networks and systems meet security standards as a condition of participating in government research projects. Turning to a zero trust architecture can be the best course of action to overcome common challenges.

In this group discussion, hear from distinguished experts who will lead participants through the key considerations for IT and cyber leaders in higher education on a journey to CMMC accreditation.

Discussion Questions

  • Where is the status of CMMC today and how does it relate to providers that are FedRAMP certified?

  • How do providers like Zscaler help with CMMC compliance?

  • What is new and important in CMMC 2.0? Do POAMS / RMF apply to higher ed?

  • What are the roadblocks that limit higher education institutions from successfully conforming to the CMMC standard?

  • What are the legal considerations of performing CMMC self-attestations? Is this a good option for academia?

  • How can organizations use their existing cybersecurity efforts and link CMMC to broader modernization strategies?

  • What is the best approach to managing and segmenting CUI data?

  • How do you currently filter content and block users from accessing certain websites or categories of sites?

  • From an end user standpoint, what is required in terms of training, awareness, and access policy when adopting zero trust?

  • What is the one thing you are doing to get cybersecurity compliance on the right track?
