Building Your Diverse Inner Circle
It can be lonely at the top, and we often seek advice from those whom we like or who are like us, which may result in missed perspectives. Develop strategies to build a diverse network of leaders you can rely on, ask for advice, and build support. Understand who has the information to answer questions and who can be a powerful source of new ideas and information - originating from various perspectives willing to constructively challenge your decision making and drive more innovative solutioning.
The strategic inner circle of our network usually consists of no more than 10 people, and could also be described as our professional (though unofficially) “Advisory Board”. The more important or complex the decision is, the greater the need for diversity amongst our trusted advisors.
To become better at innovative thinking and decision-making, we need to make sure that we have many different skill sets and perspectives. If we do not, it may end up having significant implications for our potential for innovation as individuals, teams, and organisations.
