For 31 years, Angel Rivera dedicated his life to serving his country in the U.S. Army, starting in combat arms and eventually transitioning to information technology. After a long and distinguished career, the next mission was a personal one: transitioning to the civilian world. Today, Angel is a Senior Sales Engineer on Zscaler’s Public Sector team, and his path here is a powerful testament to the community, growth, and culture that make a new chapter possible.

We sat down with Angel to hear his story—a journey of finding camaraderie in a new team and discovering that the right company culture can make all the difference.

Finding a Familiar Fit in a New World

For many transitioning service members, the corporate world can feel like a foreign landscape. But for Angel, Zscaler was already on his radar. "I have known about Zscaler for years, even working with the technology briefly while in uniform," he shares. The decision was made easier by a network of Army friends who had already joined the team, but his official entry point came through a Hiring Our Heroes (HOH) fellowship, which allowed him to start as an intern.

This structured pathway provided a crucial bridge from military service to a corporate role, giving him a chance to learn the ropes before taking on a full-time position.

Transitioning to Civilian Life

The transition from military to civilian life involves more than just a career change; it’s a fundamental shift in daily structure, customs, and even dress code. Angel is candid about the adjustment.

“The team here at Zscaler has been very welcoming, making my transition feel pretty seamless,” he says. “But it has been a big shift. I wore a uniform so long that things that are relatively normal for civilians can be a challenge. The team even entertains my silly questions about what the 'uniform' is to meet customers.”

This small detail speaks volumes, highlighting the importance of supportive colleagues that provide guidance and resources for success without judgment. “You do have to pay attention and be deliberate about integrating,” Angel advises. “Zscaler has made this experience great.”

Growth Anchored by Community: The Power of Vets@Z

Angel’s career growth at Zscaler began when he joined the engineering team where he was exposed to the forefront of innovation. “It opened my eyes to the talent that exists in this space,” he explains. “I am learning the Zscaler platform extensively. This is the future of cybersecurity.”

But the most impactful part of his growth wasn't just technical; it was human. This supportive network is anchored by Vets@Zscaler, our Employee Resource Group (ERG) dedicated to supporting and empowering our veteran community. For Angel, this group wasn't just a resource; it was a cornerstone of his transition, providing mentorship and a built-in community from day one.

He was encouraged to set up meetings across the organization to learn what others did. “I set up over 100 meetings, and without hesitation, they all provided me with guidance,” he recalls. It’s this formal commitment to connection, championed by groups like Vets@Z, that led Angel to his most powerful realization: “I believe in the technology, but the team is what makes this organization great.”

Angel’s Advice to Transitioning Service Members

When asked what advice he would give to other veterans considering a career in tech, Angel’s response is enthusiastic and clear.

“Join the team!” he says. “If you’re looking for a great team and want to be on the cutting edge of cybersecurity, this is the place to be. Don’t be afraid to ask questions—everyone on this team has been so accommodating.”

His final message is one of service, extending a hand to those who will follow in his footsteps.

“If you don’t know where to start, reach out to me anytime. I am always here for a veteran.”
