From Hour-Long Tasks to High-Impact Innovation: How Henry S. Augments His Role with AI
At Zscaler, our "AI Forward, People First" philosophy is rooted in the belief that AI doesn't replace expertise—it amplifies it. We are cultivating a culture where AI innovators are those who look at established processes and ask, "How can we do this better?" Meet Henry Shen, Principal Sales Engineer, who turned a quest for productivity into a breakthrough in product innovation.
When Zscaler made a bold commitment to embrace AI across how we work, I saw an opportunity to rethink my own day-to-day as a Principal Sales Engineer. I’d spent years helping customers translate Zero Trust principles into practical outcomes. But with the latest wave of agentic AI, I realized I could augment my role in ways that weren’t possible before.
The First Step: Reclaiming Time for Strategy
My journey started with a simple desire to clear the noise. Like many in technical sales, I found that routine, essential tasks were consuming the hours I wanted to spend on deep strategy.
I began leveraging ZChat, our internal AI assistant, to handle time-consuming tasks. I treated the AI not as a search engine, but as a junior analyst. By giving it a specific persona or role, I get better output:
The Synthesizer: Instead of spending an hour organizing raw data, I use AI to synthesize discovery notes into clear, actionable summaries in minutes.
The Translator: I often need to turn dense technical specifications into crisp executive narratives. AI helps me bridge the gap between "engineer speak" and "C-suite strategy."
The Stress-Tester: Before a big presentation, I pressure-test my demo scripts against specific industry pain points, using the AI to simulate tough customer questions.
The results were immediate. Tasks that once took an hour now took minutes. I reclaimed hours every week that I channeled into higher-impact activities: deep design sessions with customers and crucial field feedback loops.
The Leap from Assistant to Innovator
Reclaiming my time was just the beginning. I began digging deeper into agentic AI—systems that don’t just respond to prompts but can reason, plan, and act across different tools. I asked myself: If these capabilities make me more effective, could they also solve the user-experience friction we sometimes see in the field?
While the security promise of Zero Trust is widely embraced, the implementation requires a shift from "over-permissioned" to "least privilege principles". By introducing an agentic layer, we bridge the gap between security permission models and user productivity. Chatbots act as an intelligent intermediary to streamline interactions, translate existing legacy complexity to clear Zero Trust guidance, and help people move forward confidently within established guardrails. It was built to complement existing controls and processes, enhancing clarity and speed while respecting security and compliance boundaries.
When I shared the prototype with our Product Management team, the response was energizing. They saw the potential for this to make Zero Trust accessible without compromising rigor.
Delivering New Value
What excites me most is the broader impact. This prototype showed us an opportunity to work faster and more confidently. By bringing a fresh, end-user-centric perspective to Zero Trust, we are making strong security feel simple and approachable.
But this innovation relies on a crucial partnership: AI capability plus human judgment. While the model can reason and act across tools, it doesn’t live in our customers’ world the way I do. My unique contribution is applying judgment under real-world constraints—translating messy field context, business priorities, and risk tolerance into clear requirements. I decide what “good” looks like, when to proceed, and when to stop.
By combining deep domain knowledge with agentic AI, I’ve unlocked a new dimension in my role—bridging the gap between architecting solutions for customers and actively shaping the product itself. AI hasn't replaced my expertise; it has amplified it, allowing me to deliver value that is clearer, faster, and more impactful for our industry.
