Trust, Discipline, and Zero Trust: Shota Miyahara’s Journey from SDR to AE
Across the fast-evolving landscape of enterprise cloud security, Shota Miyahara has built a career defined by conviction, discipline, and customer impact. Having progressed from Sales Development Representative (SDR) to Account Executive (AE) within Zscaler’s Japan GTM team, Shota now serves as a key strategic partner to mid-market enterprises across Tokyo, helping CXOs safeguard their organizations with the Zscaler Zero Trust Exchange.
On Career Growth in Zscaler's Sales Team
I joined as an SDR because Zscaler wasn't tweaking old security, it was making it obsolete. Coming back as an AE came down to one thing: the product actually does what we say it does, and customers feel that from day one. There's nothing better in sales than a solution you can stand behind completely. On top of that, the sales leadership here is exceptional. I knew from the start that I would learn more, faster, than anywhere else.
What does it take to thrive as an AE?
Being genuinely curious about your customer's business, not just their tech stack, but the real pressures their executives are losing sleep over. MEDDPICC discipline is what separates the AEs who are always surprised at quarter-end from the ones who call their number with confidence in week one. In Japan especially, trust is built slowly and lost instantly so showing up prepared every single time is very important.
What is the most rewarding part?
You're not pushing a product, you're changing how an entire organization thinks about risk. When a deal closes here, I know thousands of employees are working more securely because of that conversation. That's not something I could say at most companies.
On Career Development
I originally joined as an SDR, and then came back as an AE. The fact that I returned says everything. That progression wasn't accidental; it was built by leaders who genuinely invested in my career, not just my quota. What's kept me most engaged is realizing that selling and market-building are two different skills, and Japan demands both. Zscaler is a truly global company across APJ and beyond, which means strong performance in Tokyo gets noticed far beyond Tokyo.
How does AI amplify your work?
AI handles the prep so I can focus on the conversation that actually matters. I walk into executive meetings already knowing the customer's risk exposure, so instead of educating, I'm immediately challenging and advising. But as AI lowers the language barrier, the real edge becomes what it can't replicate; knowing why a deal stalls when no one said no. That's Japan. AI is a sparring partner. The human who understands this market is still the one who closes. It’s truly Human + AI.
What advice would you give to someone considering a career as an AE at Zscaler?
Get comfortable being uncomfortable. This market will expose every gap in your game, and that's exactly the point. Learn MEDDPICC until it's instinct, not a framework you reference after the call. And think bigger than your number; the best AEs here are market builders, not just quota hitters. If you want a career that genuinely travels across industries and geos, build it here.
