Examples of Attack Surfaces

The first step to reducing your attack surface involves understanding each source of risk in your organization.

The Digital Attack Surface Includes:

  • Public-facing websites with logins, search boxes, and file upload capabilities
  • APIs that can leak data across different applications
  • Misconfigured cloud resources, such as storage buckets in AWS or Azure
  • Employee-owned devices that are used for work (BYOD)
  • IoT, including smart printers and cameras
  • Shadow IT, including unsanctioned applications and unmanaged developer test zones

The Physical Attack Surface Includes:

  • Endpoint devices such as employee laptops and mobile phones
  • Open USB ports and external hard drives
  • Server rooms and on-prem data centers
  • Office buildings and unattended workstations

The Social Engineering Attack Surface Includes:

  • Spear phishing disguises phishing emails as legitimate communications from HR, IT, or other trusted corporate sources
  • Whaling attacks, which are a form of spear phishing, use publicly-available research to target executives and other high-value targets
  • Smishing targets employees with urgent-sounding text messages and notifications
  • Pretexting happens when threat actors devise a believable scenario that tricks employees into sharing sensitive information

The AI Attack Surface Includes:

  • Enterprise AI models that contain sensitive training data for model fine-tuning
  • AI model APIs that can be exposed to the public internet
  • Shadow AI tools, which don’t have AI security guardrails in place
  • Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) databases that contain enterprise data
  • Service accounts used by AI agents, which are frequently over-privileged
  • Autonomous AI agents that have execution tools such as APIs or bash commands
  • Exposed model context protocol (MCP) servers

“Broader use of AI across enterprise workflows has created more paths for data and access to be exposed, increasing the likelihood of data leakage, prompt misuse, and AI-assisted attacks—reinforcing the need for zero trust architecture and AI-powered security controls.”

Attack Surface vs. Attack Surface Management (ASM)

The attack surface encompasses all assets and resources that threat actors can target in a cyberattack, whereas attack surface management (ASM) is the strategy used to detect and protect those assets from threats. Attack surface management includes continuous processes that discover attack surfaces, inventory vulnerable assets, prioritize those risks, and remediate weaknesses.

Because attack surfaces are dynamic, attack surface management must include continuous processes and tooling that continuously adapts to the changing enterprise environment.

To reduce the attack surface, organizations should patch and update all operating systems and applications regularly. They should segment the network to isolate sensitive data and endpoints, and establish regular employee training to reduce social engineering risks. It’s also important to implement a zero trust architecture and enforce least-privileged access controls.

Zscaler reduces the attack surface through the Zero Trust Exchange platform, which directly connects users to applications. Zscaler replaces VPNs and hides applications from the public internet. The platform enforces granular application-level segmentation, inline traffic inspection, and least-privileged access controls. With Zscaler, organizations minimize risky exposures across users, devices, and cloud workloads.

The AI attack surface includes vulnerable AI assets such as generative AI models, autonomous AI agents, non-human identities, and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) pipelines. As organizations adopt AI, they must secure against common AI attack types including prompt injection, model poisoning, and exploitation of over-privileged non-human identities.

An attack surface includes all potential assets and resources that threat actors can use to breach enterprise systems. An attack vector refers to a specific attack path or tactic that threat actors use to break into enterprise systems. Attack surfaces include assets such as databases, IoT, and generative AI models. Attack vectors include tactics such as phishing, malware, and exploiting stolen credentials.

Zero trust shrinks the attack surface by hiding applications behind a proxy architecture, which connects users directly to specific applications. It enforces least-privileged access policies that provide the minimum required permissions for users to complete their tasks. Identity is continuously verified, which limits the impact of compromised credential exploitation. Zero trust also applies microsegmentation, which protects sensitive assets and stops lateral movement.
