  • ISO/IEC 27001:

“A total of 18,033 TB of data was transferred to AI/ ML applications, a 93% year-over-year rise.”

— Read the 2026 ThreatLabz AI Security Report

With that data transfer comes the risk of data leakage. Without proper AI guardrails, employees can easily paste customer personally identifiable information (PII) or corporate intellectual property like source code into public generative AI models. Some models ingest this data to train future models, which can eventually expose sensitive data to the public.

To address these data security risks, organizations start by implementing the CIA triad.

What Is the CIA Triad in Data Security?

The CIA triad is the foundation of modern data security strategies. The triad, which stands for Confidentiality, Integrity, and Availability, outlines how data should be managed across organizations.

Confidentiality requires that sensitive data is restricted to only authorized viewers. Integrity ensures the trustworthiness of data by preventing data tampering via version control and audit logs. Availability guarantees that users have access to the data they’re authorized to view, even if disruptive threats such as denial of service (DOS) attacks occur.

What is the CIA triad in data security? The CIA triad, which stands for Confidentiality, Integrity, and Availability, is the foundation of modern data security strategies. Confidentiality refers to authorized data access and enforcement mechanisms such as user permissions and encryption. Integrity refers to data trustworthiness, which is established via audit logs and version control. Data availability involves reliable access to data via backups, which mitigates the impact of attacks like distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks.

Regulatory Compliance Reduces Costs

Data breaches and regulatory noncompliance are costly. According to IBM, the average cost of a data breach was $4.44M globally and $10.22M in the United States (IBM 2025 Cost of a Data Breach Report). Data breach costs include everything from regulatory fines to data recovery costs, legal fees, operational downtime, and reputational damage.

Remaining compliant with data security regulatory requirements reduces these costs and helps the SOC respond to incidents faster.

Enterprises that use AI and automation in their data security programs generate even more cost savings. According to IBM’s 2026 Cost of a Data Breach Report, these organizations saved an average of $1.93M USD from automating security processes and using AI to enhance existing security tools.

Post-Quantum Cryptography and NIST Compliance

Post-quantum cryptography represents a major shift in regulatory compliance. Threat actors and nation-states practice “harvest now, decrypt later,” which involves exfiltrating and storing encrypted corporate data. When quantum computers can decrypt classical ciphers in the future, these threat actors will then decrypt that stored data.

To defend against these tactics, NIST developed three post-quantum cryptography standards in August 2024. These federal information processing standards (FIPS) include:

  • FIPS 203, also known as the Module-Lattice-Based Key-Encapsulation Mechanism (ML-KEM) Standard. FIPS 203 is a key encapsulation mechanism. It also outlines key establishment processes that help organizations protect data in motion between web browsers and the cloud.
  • FIPS 204, also known as the Module-Lattice-Based Digital Signature (ML-DSA) Standard. Organizations can use FIPS 204 to secure their digital signatures and establish guaranteed identity verification, software updates, and document integrity.
  • FIPS 205, also known as the Stateless Hash-Based Digital Signature (SLH-DSA) Standard. It relies on hash-based cryptography rather than lattice-based math. FIPS 205 reduces the reliance on a single cryptographic approach and helps maintain algorithmic agility.

It’s a best practice to use both classical algorithms, such as ECDHE, and quantum-safe algorithms like ML-KEM. This improves algorithmic agility because organizations can swap cipher suites without needing to re-architect their underlying systems. Algorithmic agility will help organizations adapt to quantum compliance requirements in the future.

Post-quantum cryptography is designed to protect against “harvest now, decrypt later” attacks, in which threat actors steal encrypted data and store that data until quantum computers can decrypt that information. To enforce post-quantum cryptography, organizations should align with NIST standards including FIPS 203, FIPS 204, and FIPS 205.

How Does Zero Trust Support Data Protection?

The zero trust principle of “never trust, always verify” requires that organizations enforce least-privileged access controls. Zero trust grants granular, application-specific access and reduces both lateral movement and the risk of a widespread data breach.

With zero trust and data protection, organizations benefit from stringent data controls. Zero trust platforms also decrypt, inspect, and re-encrypt all data in motion. This practice prevents sensitive data exfiltration through encrypted channels.

AI and Data Security: How Do They Work Together?

AI-enhanced cybersecurity tooling protects against modern attacker TTPs. Threat actors use machine learning to scan codebases, automate malicious payload delivery, and create personalized social engineering campaigns. Enterprises can secure GenAI usage and block AI-orchestrated attacks with advanced capabilities like agentic SecOps.

Manage Shadow AI Risks

To manage shadow AI, organizations enforce inline DLP controls that inspect outbound requests. These controls block unauthorized data uploads while allowing safe interactions with sanctioned AI platforms.

AI security posture management (AI-SPM) tools generate AI bill of materials (AI-BOMs) and AI asset inventories. These assets help security teams identify shadow AI assets and mitigate risks.

Secure Non-Human Identities and APIs

AI agents rely on machine-to-machine connections. These connections require non-human identities (NHIs) such as API keys, OAuth tokens, and automated service accounts. But non-human identities work outside of traditional multifactor authentication protocols. Therefore, NHIs are a high-value target for threat actors.

Securing NHIs requires API protection that inventories NHIs continuously, scans for suspicious behavior, and revokes compromised keys.

Shift to Agentic SecOps

Because AI-enhanced attacks operate at a speed that manual triage simply cannot address, they burden overworked SOCs.

“SOCs are challenged with limited scope, operational complexity, and slow response times. AI didn’t create these problems, but it has made solving them far more urgent, by expanding the attack surface and accelerating how attackers do recon, exploit gaps, and adapt in real time.”

— Michelle McLean, Sr. Director of Product Marketing, Zscaler in a recent blog post about agentic SecOps

Agentic SecOps deploys specialized AI agents that:

  • Analyze large volumes of transaction data,
  • Correlate signals across domains, and
  • Initiate closed-loop enforcement actions like user isolation.

Common Data Security Implementation Challenges

  • Legacy infrastructure can’t support modern encryption standards efficiently. Enterprises often find that performance suffers when security teams adopt new encryption methodologies.
  • Alert fatigue increases with tooling sprawl. When security teams must manage data security across multiple point solutions, SOC analysts are frequently overwhelmed with alerts. Correlating events across solutions is a challenge.
  • Encrypted traffic hides common exfiltration pathways. Teams struggle to detect threats hidden in encrypted traffic when their security tools can’t see into all types of traffic.

Best Practices To Maintain Data Security

  • Perform regular risk assessments. Understanding where sources of risk exist in your organization is a critical first step towards risk mitigation and prevention.
  • Enforce continuous least-privileged access controls. Limit user and non-human identity access permissions to only resources that are required to complete their tasks.
  • Implement SSL/TLS inspection. Adopt a data security platform that decrypts and analyzes all encrypted traffic in real time. This protects against threats in encrypted channels.
  • Deploy inline AI guardrails. Monitor employee interactions with public LLMs and block unauthorized data transfers automatically with inline DLP.
  • Automate the discovery and classification of shadow AI, IT, and data. Machine learning models can easily identify and tag shadow assets such as databases and AI models.
  • Keep high-quality data backups. Maintaining good data backups is a data protection best practice. It minimizes the impact of data loss and helps organizations recover faster from data exfiltration and ransomware attacks.

Phishing and other types of social engineering attacks are the most common cause of data breaches. Social engineering attacks, such as pretexting, vishing, and baiting all manipulate people into sharing sensitive information with threat actors. AI increases the threat of social engineering because threat actors now use AI to create personalized phishing emails and websites at a scale that wasn’t possible with manual processes.

Data security protects data confidentiality, integrity, and availability, whereas data privacy governs data usage. Data security refers to the strategies and tools that protect sensitive data from unauthorized access, modification, and loss. Data privacy includes the organizational policies and regulatory frameworks that govern how data is collected, used, shared, and retained. Data security is a prerequisite for data privacy.

The three core elements of data security are confidentiality, integrity, and availability, also known as the CIA triad. Confidentiality requires that data is only accessed by authorized users while integrity requires that organizations maintain data trustworthiness by preventing data tampering and accidental corruption. Availability ensures that users can access data regardless of incidents such as denial of service (DoS) attacks.

Generative AI impacts corporate data security by increasing the attack surface. Generative AI security risks include shadow AI, sensitive data uploads to public LLMs, and AI-orchestrated cyberattacks. At the same time, AI can enhance data security. AI-powered security tools can automate security processes, improve enterprise security posture, and help teams respond faster to attacks.

Data classification is important for security compliance because it identifies and categorizes different types of sensitive data, including personally identifiable information (PII) and financial records. With data classification, organizations apply precise security controls, encryption, and data retention policies that are required by regulatory frameworks including GDPR, HIPAA, and PCI DSS. Data classification helps prevent compliance violations and data breaches.

A zero trust architecture protects sensitive data by enforcing the principle of “never trust, always verify.” Zero trust enforces continuous authentication and strict least-privileged access controls. Organizations can decrypt traffic to identify threats in real time, which mitigates the risk of lateral movement and prevents unauthorized data access or exfiltration.

Post-quantum cryptography refers to cryptographic algorithms that are designed to secure data against future quantum computers, which could break classical encryption. Organizations should adopt post-quantum cryptography today to defend against “harvest now, decrypt later” attacks, in which threat actors and nation states exfiltrate data today with the goal of decrypting that data once quantum technology advances.

Data security is a discipline within information security that protects assets such as digital files, databases, and records from unauthorized access, data tampering, and exfiltration. Cybersecurity is a related discipline that focuses on protecting entire networks, devices, and digital infrastructure from cyberattacks.

DSPM differs from traditional DLP because DSPM provides continuous visibility into where sensitive data lives and how it’s exposed, whereas DLP enforces policies that detect and block unauthorized data transfer. DSPM automatically discovers, classifies, and assesses risks for data at rest across multicloud and hybrid environments.

Security teams must address non-human identity (NHI) and API security because NHIs and APIs, such as service accounts, API keys, and third-party integrations, bypass traditional multifactor authentication (MFA).  Teams should enforce practices such as maintaining automated inventories, monitoring for suspicious behavior, enforcing least-privileged access controls, and revoking compromised credentials in real time.

Agentic SecOps uses specialized AI agents to automate and speed up threat detection, investigation, and response. It analyzes large volumes of security telemetry and correlates signals across domains. By executing closed-loop containment, such as isolation of compromised users, agentic SecOps helps overworked security operations centers (SOCs) and addresses complex security threats quickly.

Enterprises can prevent sensitive data leakage into public LLMs by implementing inline AI guardrails and advanced data loss prevention (DLP). With these controls, organizations can inspect user prompts in real time and block unauthorized inputs of data such as PII, intellectual property, and customer data into public LLMs. Advanced DLP for LLMs allows employees to interact safely with sanctioned AI tools.
