The Rhythm of Culture: My Summer Internship at Zscaler
Meet Morgan G., one of our 2025 People & Culture Interns! Morgan is pursuing a Master of Arts in Communication at the University of Arkansas. When she’s not diving into communication strategies, she enjoys trying new coffee shops, hiking, and traveling.
As a graduate student, my goal for an internship isn't just to contribute to projects, but to understand the underlying rhythm of a company’s culture—the pulse that dictates how ideas become reality. In my 12 weeks at Zscaler, I didn’t just observe this rhythm; I helped create it. I learned how our values aren't just posters on a wall, but the very beat that powers how meaningful work gets done.
At Zscaler, I quickly learned that Teamwork is the natural result of radical Ownership. My projects, even as an intern, weren’t siloed assignments. I was tasked with helping our internal communications team streamline its workflow. Instead of just being a user, I took the lead in driving our adoption of Asana. I created a centralized "Best Practices" guide for our team and designed a new intake form to codify our processes, ensuring our team could focus more on collaboration and less on navigating bureaucracy.
I also saw firsthand how this culture translates Passion into Innovation. Here, challenges are seen as opportunities. Through conversations across teams, a common theme emerged: a need for more centralized employee resources and clearer internal career paths. The response wasn't to accept the status quo; it was to find a solution. I had the opportunity to partner with leads in Learning & Development and Talent Acquisition to brainstorm and draft formal proposals for new solutions, like a unified Career Development Hub and a Personalized Mobility Tool. It was a powerful lesson in how a culture of innovation doesn't just solve existing problems—it proactively builds a better experience for its people.
What unites everything at Zscaler is a clear sense of purpose, driven by Customer Obsession. I got to see this value in action when I partnered with the Learning & Development team to help facilitate a workshop on communication styles, an opportunity where I could apply my passion for teaching to help my peers collaborate more effectively, long-term.
My summer at Zscaler has been more than an internship; it’s been a powerful lesson in how a culture built on trust, purpose, and momentum operates. From creating content for social media and managing a company-wide platform implementation to facilitating workshops and shaping strategic proposals, the opportunity to contribute meaningfully from day one has been incredibly formative. It’s an experience that has given me a new framework for what a high-impact culture looks like, and I know picking Zscaler as the company to intern at was the right decision.
