Zscaler Mobile Security Signals New Paradigm

Today, I’m excited to announce a new paradigm shift for mobile security with the introduction of the Zscaler Mobile Security Solution, which complements the auditing and provisioning capabilities of MDM with advanced threat protection, enabling real-time visibility and enforcing granular policy controls for BYOD and corporate-owned mobile environments.

Today, I’m excited to announce a new paradigm shift for mobile security with the introduction of the Zscaler Mobile Security Solution, which complements the auditing and provisioning capabilities of MDM with advanced threat protection, enabling real-time visibility and enforcing granular policy controls for BYOD and corporate-owned mobile environments.

Research from Zscaler and the FTC indicates that mobile applications are increasingly snooping on sensitive user information, including device type, geo-location, calendars and contact lists. In a best case scenario, this information is being sold to third-party advertisers. Far worse, hackers are gaining access to emails and contacts from top executive or leveraging this information to conduct advanced targeted attacks.

Would you trust your corporate employees to be judicious enough to avoid installing fake versions of popular paid apps? Are they savvy enough to reject apps that snoop on such sensitive information while they check corporate email and other business-critical data on the same device?  Would they know as soon as an app has shipped the list of contacts or the user’s email id to a remote server? As you can see, it is pretty important to have visibility and control into this situation.

Traditional appliance-based security models are often circumvented by mobile traffic and a per-device software model simply cannot scale with large enterprises. Instead, Zscaler relies on identifying malicious or suspicious apps by analyzing network traffic from the actual devices, which we accomplish by routing all inbound and outbound traffic to the Zscaler Network.

MDM solutions enable the configuration of application denylists and allowlists, but provide no insight into which applications should actually be blocked. Allowlisting tends to be an unpopular choice since it cripples the productivity of the device for end users. To this end, Zscaler has partnered with two leading MDM providers, AirWatch and MobileIron, to provide the real-time visibility and granular policy control needed to enable mobile security.

Of course, you don’t have to rely on MDM to make use of Zscaler Mobile Security. Our flexible deployment models can accommodate pretty much any environment. No matter how it is delivered, Zscaler enables real-time visibility into risk scores of mobile apps, which can be controlled through granular policies. The last two features I want to mention are the Zscaler Safe Browser and the Zscaler Secure Agent, which provide a secure browsing environment and automated user notifications, respectively.
